Charles W. McCulley (1939–2017) was a pioneering leader and devoted public servant. Charles graduated second in his class in mortuary science in San Francisco and served seven years in the U.S. Army, where he met Petra Antonia Gonzales de McCulley—his lifelong partner in service.

In 1968, the couple purchased Jones Funeral Home renaming it Angelus Chapel Mortuary, guided by a mission to serve every family with dignity, respect, and accessibility, particularly minority families excluded from other mortuaries during the Civil Rights era. Angelus Chapel Mortuary became a trusted community anchor, and the first minority-owned funeral home to secure a federal contract serving active-duty military personnel. Charles quietly absorbed costs for families in need, guided by his belief that service was a ministry, not a transaction.

Charles’ many accolades include a Certificate of Special Recognition from the U.S. Senate for organizing Pueblo’s first MLK Jr. March and Banquet, the Angelus Chapel Mortuaries Day Proclamation by Pueblo City Council and Board of County Commissioners, and recognition as Compadre del Pueblo, with Pueblo’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration dedicated in his honor. Charles served as president of the NAACP Pueblo Branch, co-founded the Pueblo MLK Jr. Holiday Commission, and chaired boards including Mount Carmel Credit Union and the Pueblo Human Resources Commission.

Through compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to community, Charles McCulley strengthened Pueblo’s social fabric. Most impactfully, Charles and Petra instilled a deep sense of family, faith, and community stewardship in their children, ensuring that this legacy, rooted in service, will endure for generations to come.
