Uncovering the Magic of the San Luis Valley

I never realized how special the San Luis Valley was until I became a Fellow assigned to El Pomar’s Regional Council there. Growing up in Colorado, I was unaware of the valley, as I spent little time in the area. However, during my one-on-ones with the San Luis Valley Regional Council, my eyes opened to the true magic of this region.

I spent the week in Alamosa conducting one-on-one conversations last November. These conversations are a time for Fellows to connect with Regional Council Members and receive feedback on the Regional Partnerships program. If you know Alamosa, you may think it doesn’t have much to offer, but that could not be further from the truth. Once you meet the people and engage in conversations with those who call the valley home, it is evident the passion they have for it. I could feel the pride of the valley as I visited stores, tried new restaurants, and spoke to the locals.

The San Luis Valley Regional Council consists of eight members spanning across Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache Counties. Their focus area is on youth development (ages 0-21), while dedicating 50 percent of funds to emergent needs each year.

As I spoke to my council members and got to know them and their experience with the council, it became clear how invested they are in their communities. I believe that is what makes the valley so special. They care deeply about their homes and the people in them, maintaining strong relationships with organizations and leaders across the valley—each committed to its continued growth. They value community, equity, and creating opportunities for all. Their passion for improving healthcare, childcare, and the overall well-being of every demographic in the valley is evident in every conversation. They know their region well and protect it fiercely. This protection and care help make a true impact.

I loved the opportunity to learn more about what the valley has to offer and how special it truly is. I left this trip feeling extremely fortunate to play a small role in making a difference in such a strong community.
