North Council member Bob Tointon has been named the 2019 Citizen of the West, the top honor awarded by the National Western Stock Show.

Each year a Citizen of the West is selected from community leaders who exemplify the spirit and determination of a western pioneer. These modern day pioneers are honored for their economic and philanthropic endeavors in the West.  We are very pleased to announce Robert “Bob” Tointon as the 41st Citizen of the West!

After serving in the United States Air Force, Bob attended Kansas State University where he received a degree in Civil Engineering and met his wife Betty. He was engaged in many aspects of general contracting with Hensel Phelps Construction Company over the next twenty years, and in 1975 became the President and CEO. He continued in this capacity until 1989 when Phelps-Tointon was formed, where he served as President and CEO before becoming Chairman in 2017. Bob operates a large ranch west of Walden, where he currently has 900 cow/calf pairs and produces 3,600 tons of hay annually.

While building successful construction companies, Bob also endeavored to build stronger communities. Bob is a member of the Greeley Rotary Club and the Colorado Forum. He is also a past trustee of the Longs Peak Council of the Boy Scouts, former Chairman of the Greeley Downtown Development Authority, and past chair of the University of Northern Colorado Trustees. Bob continues to support education throughout Colorado. In 1995, Bob and Betty made a contribution to UNC to partially endow the Tointon Institute, which conducts residential leadership academies for K-12 principals and teacher teams. Bob and Betty have also started the Student Recovery Program, a dropout prevention program, at two Greeley high schools. As a result of the program, 85% of the participants are graduating from high school.

Bob has received many accolades over the years, including the Casey Award from the Colorado Association of School Executives, the Bonfils Stanton Community Service Award, the Legacy Award from the Greeley Chamber of Commerce, induction into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame, and the BRAVO Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bob and Betty have two sons, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
