El Pomar Foundation will welcome ten college students over the next few weeks as participants in the 2011 Internship Program. Internship Director Mariah Golden welcomed the first intern on Monday and is eagerly awaiting the others’ arrivals. Over the course of the summer they will assist the foundation with a variety of programs and departments. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the projects they will be working on with interns hailing from St. Louis, Florida, and Mongolia with majors ranging from communications to art history.

Here is a brief introduction to each of this year’s Interns:

Nora Alami

Outreach & Emerging Leaders Development Program

"I was born and raised in Manitou Springs. As an El Pomar scholarship recipient, I am currently a sophomore at Colorado College where I am pursuing a psychology major and a double minor in philosophy and French. I have always fostered a love for the arts and am involved in a variety of forms of dance and theater on campus. Last summer, I visited family in Morocco and performed in the Fringe festival in Scotland. I hope to spend a semester abroad next spring."

Dulguun Bayasgalan

Office of the Chairman and CEO and Art Collection

"I am studying art history at the University of Alberta, and I just finished my second year. I am from the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. This year I wrote for the arts and entertainment section of the school newspaper, and it was the highlight of my extracurricular activities. I enjoy listening to music, watching films, reading books and poetry, going to the theatre, and playing guitar and other instruments."

Taylor Lobato

"I hail from Center, Colorado, which is tucked away among the potato fields of the San Luis Valley. My family raises beef cattle, and I proudly call myself a country girl at heart. I am currently a freshman at the University of Denver where I am a newly declared strategic communications and communication studies double major with minors in business and leadership. I am in the process of completing my first year in the Pioneer Leadership Program. I am also the national communications coordinator elect for DU’s Residence Hall Association. I will return to campus next year as a resident assistant, a new and exciting experience that I look forward to."

Carrie Markel

"I was born and raised in Denver, where I grew up with a great passion for sports and the outdoors. I graduated high school in 2008 and currently attend Colorado College where I will graduate in 2012 with an English major. I am a member of the varsity swim team where I hold an individual school record in the 500 freestyle. I am  also an avid volunteer with middle school children. I recently completed a semester abroad at St. Andrews University in Scotland, which prompted me to improve my writing skills not only as a student within the English department, but also as a writer for the CC newspaper, The Catalyst."

Isaiah McGregory

"I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri but have lived in Colorado Springs for over 17 years. I attend Colorado State University-Pueblo and am a senior mass communications major with a music minor. I am involved with the Thunderwolves Marching Band, CSU-Pueblo Jazz Choir, and Student Fee Governing Board. I am an elected member of Associated Student Government where I have served as Representative, Senator, and was recently elected as student body president. I am also a member of the Board of Governors for the Colorado State University System."

Ryan Patterson

Office of the Chairman and CEO and Awards for Excellence

"I am from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although I was raised in Santa Fe, I spent a lot of time in Colorado Springs visiting family and attending summer hockey camps at the Air Force Academy. I am currently a junior at Colorado College studying international political economy and German. I have a twin brother and younger brother who are also attending CC. I enjoy the outdoors, and I am very involved in intramural sports such as soccer, volleyball, ice hockey, broomball, softball and inner-tube water polo. I am also a member of the Colorado College Triathlon Team and completed a half-Ironman in 2008."

Peter Perdue

"My hometown is Colorado Springs, and I grew up in the Cheyenne Mountain area. I am in the class of 2013 at Princeton University pursuing a B.A. in economics and a minor in finance. Outside of the classroom, I am involved with the college council of my residential college and a Christian group called Princeton Faith and Action. I love sports, especially football, and enjoy skiing, hiking, and mountain biking."

Katie Raffaghello

"I am an only child, born and raised in Centennial. I am a lifelong vegetarian, which has shaped many aspects of my life. I attend the University of Denver, where I am a first-year student. I am majoring in political science while pursuing minors in leadership studies and business administration. At the University of Denver, I am involved in the Pioneer Leadership Program, University Honors Program and the Academic Affairs Committee. Volunteering is a major part of my life, and I volunteer weekly at a nonprofit cafe. I love to ski and spend a good amount of time in the mountains during the winter. As a Colorado native, I am a huge Rockies fan and love attending games. I played tennis in high school and continue to play in my spare time."

Wiley Reynolds

"I was born in Palm Beach, Florida and moved to Colorado Springs when I was ten, where I stayed until I left for college. I attended Princeton University, where I majored in philosophy and wrote a thesis on time travel. I have just finished my second year at George Washington University Law School. I studied creative writing at Princeton and elsewhere, and it is currently my main personal hobby. My other interests include consumer protection law and kickboxing."

Levi Schmeiler

"I am a sophomore studying business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I was born and raised in Colorado Springs and went to school a few blocks away from El Pomar Foundation. At school I am involved in a group on campus that brings speakers and entertainers to campus for students (including our concert for Spring Fling, a carnival held at Penn every year)."
