Operating a conference and education facility utilized by more than 30,000 people each year requires a dedicated team. Administrators, conference support staff, housekeepers and grounds crew all work together to make sure that guests only see one thing: a beautiful and functional space conducive to bringing out out the best in visitors with limited time and big plans.
No one knew that better or took more pride in his work than Glen Marchadie. Marchadie, a longtime El Pomar Foundation employee, passed away on December 29 after a battle with cancer. El Pomar staffers recently gathered to remember Glen and his passion for the care of Penrose House and the hospitality he provided for guests. Glen was remembered for his in-depth and entertaining tours, meticulous care of the hundred-year-old marble and tile floors in Penrose House, and his love of professional and collegiate sports.
Prior to joining the team at El Pomar, Glen dedicated over 21 years to the military, serving in both the Vietnam War and Gulf War. While he served in many capacities, in the Gulf War Glen worked as an NBC-NCO, or Nuclear Biological Chemical Noncommissioned Officer. In this role, Glen was responsible for warning troops of potential threats, and was charged with decontamination in the event of an attack. El Pomar Senior Vice President George Guerrero, who served with Glen at this time, recounted how Glen’s attention to detail was essential in a wartime environment.
Glen will be missed by all of us at El Pomar, and by the many guests who enjoyed his cheerful demeanor and dedication to making Penrose House special. We will miss his lively stories, his love for LSU football, and his loyal friendship.
