Since 1979, Tu Casa, Inc. has empowered children and adults to live healthy lives, free of domestic violence and sexual assault in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley encompasses 6 counties: Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache. Tu Casa’s headquarters are in the city of Alamosa, the Valley’s largest city, though the agency serves all six counties.
Tu Casa is an integral part of the San Luis Valley community, serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Since 2009, Tu Casa has seen a 300% increase in the number of victims of sexual assault and abuse seeking Tu Casa’s services. Approximately 99% of Tu Casa’s clientele fit into one or more categories considered under-served in the Valley, including but not limited to low-income, unemployed, or disabled individuals.
This past December, the San Luis Valley Regional Council of El Pomar Foundation granted $17,000 to support Tu Casa’s renovation of the Children’s Advocacy Center. The grant will specifically be used for the purchase of remaining materials for the Center, including window installations, a new phone system, bedding, and additional items, as needed, to create the most trauma-informed, child-friendly environment possible.
Tu Casa’s Children’s Advocacy Center is the first of its kind in the Valley. It consolidates services for abused children into one place, so that children do not have to be interviewed multiple times to get into the systems of child services. The new center will reduce secondary trauma to children and streamline the process of providing services. Previously, the closest center of its kind was in Pueblo.
Tu Casa’s crisis intervention and immediate and on-going support benefit the entire Valley. The organization is truly indispensable to the region.
