Colorado Springs Celebrates Arts Month

By Allie Romo

This October, the smell of pumpkin spice is not the only thing in the air. Art is in the air and on people’s minds thanks to an effort from Colorado Spring’s Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region (COPPeR.)  The month-long celebration of the arts is joining the national effort, National Arts and Humanities Month, to celebrate the arts locally. COPPeR hopes October Arts Month will become an annual effort to promote the arts in our community.
We are all familiar with the emotional reaction we get from art, but rarely do we remember the economic impact the arts have on our community. To bring this to light, here are a few fun facts…

  • In the Pikes Peak region, the arts have a $72 million economic impact
  • Arts nonprofits account for 2,168 full-time jobs
  • Of the 50 largest cities in the US, Colorado Springs is 23rd in creative jobs

COPPeR’s mission is to raise awareness for the “quality, diversity and value of the arts in our community,” and Arts month is a fantastic way to celebrate arts on a city-wide scale. October Arts Month kicked off with “Artini”  on October 1st at The Mansion, in Downtown Colorado Springs.  “Artini was an event unlike any other I have been to in Colorado Springs.  It brought together a cross-section of people and put our most talented artists on display.  It was an ideal way to kick off Arts Month and remind us what a truly incredible arts scene we have in our community,” said Devanie Helman.

Other official events for October Arts Month included the 7th Annual Business Arts and Lunch, held on October 7th and the Pikes Peak Region’s first AIR Shift Workshop.  Anyone interested in becoming involved in Arts Month can easily do so through the “Arts Month Toolkit” which provides ads, fliers, and logos for Arts Month ( The celebration and appreciation of arts in the Pikes Peak region doesn’t stop on November 1.
