Mission and Goals
Mission:
Facilitate the process for developing diverse leadership potential with a strong commitment to broad-based community involvement, civic engagement and service on nonprofit boards and commissions in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
Goals:
(1) Promote and communicate the Emerging Leaders program mission, accomplishments and impact to the broader community
(2) Provide opportunities to attend and complete community leadership development programs; leadership skills training and networking with the broader community
(3) Develop and support collaborative projects that address community quality of life issues
CONVENE / COMMUNICATE
These efforts promote and communicate the Emerging Leaders Program vision, mission and accomplishments to the broader community.
ELD Advisory Councils. The Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Native American advisory councils connect "spheres of influence" through inovative partnerships and broad-based community involvement.
ELD Program/Outreach Website. Easy access to information, networks, and opportunities.
Colorado Springs and Pueblo ELD Participants Civic Profiles. Connections to other civic leaders via online civic engagement profiles.
EMPOWER
ELD provides opportunities to participate in community leadership development programs, skills training, and networking with the broader community.

Action and Outreach
Collaborative projects that address community quality of life issues.
The Milton E. Proby (MEP) Cultural Heritage Room Induction Ceremony. Preserving and documenting the civic contributions of deceased African-American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic and Native American individuals from Southern Colorado.
The Pueblo ELD/Multicultural Youth Leadership Development Initiative. Activities to support middle-school students using a broad-based community network.
Multicultural Youth Leadership Initiative for Excellence-MYLIFE Project (Pueblo). "Life skills" sessions for eighth-grade students at the Air Force Academy and UCCS.
Colorado Springs ELD program CEO Roundtable Outreach. A partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, the CEO Roundtable convenes executive leadership to facilitate increased board service opportunitities for ethnic minorities.
The Black Pastors Union (BPU). Providing technical assistance and collaboration with the broader community.
Pikes Peak Community Development (PPCD) Initiative. An advisory group that provides expertise, resources, and strategies to address quality of life issues in southeast El Paso County. PPCD includes a College Readiness and Success Program to help high school students and their families. More information.
ELD Advisory Council: The advisory council structure is an ELD program strategy that connects the
“Spheres of Influence” through innovative partnerships and broad based community involvement. The
advisory councils build upon ELD best practices to convene, empower, and take action. The ELD
Advisory Council members include El Pomar Foundation senior staff and Fellows; the community
leadership development program directors; ELD/Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native Americans program
participants and scholarship recipients.

Colorado Springs and Pueblo ELD Participants Civic Profile: ELD participants are eligible for the
online profile when they have completed a Community Leadership Development Program, board
governance or leadership skills training. The civic profile also includes their service on nonprofit boards,
civic involvement, areas of expertise and education/training accomplishments.
Leadership Program Opportunities
ELD ethnic minority advisory councils recruit and ensure enrollment and completion of Leadership
Training and Workshops. El Pomar Foundation offers scholarship opportunities for ELD Participants
that are accepted to Pueblo and Colorado Springs community and leadership development programs.
- Colorado Springs Leadership Institute (CSLI): CSLI is a program designed to help participants
learn and implement leadership skills with a goal toward building collaborative leadership teams
that proactively address the challenges facing the Colorado Springs community.
- Center for Creative Leadership/Community Leadership Program (CCL/CLP): CCL/CLP is a three
and one-half day program that supports and develops emerging leaders within the Colorado
Springs community.
- Leadership Pikes Peak (LPP): LPP is a local nonprofit that provides vital and diverse community
leaders with a broad-based network and the ability to enhance their civic contributions.
- ELD Leadership Plenty: Leadership Plenty is a leadership training program that introduces
essential skills for community leadership, such as building partnerships, managing conflict and
taking action. It is a powerful learning tool to help diverse groups, in communities large and
small, learn to work together to solve problems and create opportunities.
- ELD Board Governance Workshop Colorado Springs: The “Serving as an Effective Board
Member” Training will provide you useful tools and resources to make your board experience
meaningful for you and your fellow board members. In the end, the organization you serve will be
more capable of achieving its mission.
MYLIFE
ELD participants and middle school counselors plan/facilitate seven (7) “life skills” sessions for
(75+) eighth grade students including sessions at the Air Force Academy and the University of
Colorado at Colorado Springs. The MYLIFE project is a partnership with both Pueblo School
Districts Superintendents and local University/College Presidents.
MYLIFE Goal:
To create a leadership experience for Pueblo youth of all ethnic heritages that enhances
community service, fosters leadership, encourages education, and promotes career and
professional development.
MYLIFE Specific Objectives:
- Create a curriculum that will provide student participants with information necessary to
develop their knowledge of the arts, culture, health, life skills, career development and
leadership;
- Impart the curriculum in such a way that students will develop a broad knowledge base
that will encourage them to view their world through diverse perspectives;
- Assist participants in understanding the importance of maintaining a positive and healthy
lifestyle and an attitude that supports their physical and mental well being;
- Provide resources and information to assist students in identifying persons, organizations,
and programs that are available when making life decisions;
- Help participants understand how the choices they make will impact their future;
- Support students in developing a positive attitude, a sense that there is hope and an
opportunity to look to the future regardless of the dream.

CEO Roundtable
The outreach activity is a partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Excellence with support from ELD
Participants and local ‘experts.’ The mission is to convene the broader community executive leadership
from all sectors to facilitate an increased level of ethnic minority opportunities to serve on civic and
nonprofit governing boards in Colorado Springs. CEO Roundtable Annual Breakfast: October 14, 2011
CEO Roundtable Goals/Action Plan:
- Identify ethnic minority mentors from Colorado Springs nonprofit boards and staff who will
facilitate ELD program participants transition to serve on nonprofit boards
- Generate specific strategies to facilitate more opportunities for ethnic minorities to serve on
boards
- Implement these strategies
2010-11 CEO Roundtable Event/Outreach Timeline:

ELD/CEO Roundtable Taskforce Outreach - January 20, 2011 and February 17, 2011 –
Convene selected small groups (8-12) of private, public, and nonprofit CEO’s @ Penrose House

The Black Pastors Union (BPU): The Foundation‘s outreach to the BPU is designed to provide
technical assistance and facilitate collaborations/partnerships with the broader community. The BPU is
a local minority-led organization with a vision to develop a broad-based community network and have an
impact on the faith-based community leading the charge to address the quality-of-life issues across the
full-spectrum of human needs.
Pikes Peak Community Development (PPCD) Initiative: The Foundation convene, organize and
assist an “Advisory Group” of civic-minded professionals that provide expertise, resources, strategies
to assist in identifying and addressing quality of life issues that impact southeast region of El Paso
County.
- PPCD Mission: Facilitate the process to support thePPCD Advisory Group development of a
comprehensive set of grant making, technical assistance and capacity building activities to
address shared concerns and priorities.
- PPCD Focus: The PPCD Advisory Group focus youth and education with opportunities for
ethnic minorities, military youth & families that live in the Region. The plan is to identify and
support ways to “connect kids to post-secondary educational opportunities”. The PPCD
Advisory Group has developed a College Readiness and Success Program to help high school
students and their families; Principals/Counselors/Teachers/Counselors learn more about
scholarships, financial aid and student support services in order to successfully attend and
remain in college.
