San Luis Valley Regional Council continues to support nursing education, with $222,000 in scholarships granted since 2012

The San Luis Valley Regional Council is in its second year of providing funding for nursing scholarships. In an effort to increase the number of medical professionals in the region and create jobs, the Council seized an opportunity to partner with Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and Adams State University (ASU) to provide nursing scholarships to residents pursuing a bachelor of science in nursing, nurse practitioner, master’s in nursing education, and physician’s assistant degrees.  The objective of the program is to improve the retention and increase the quantity of medical specialists in the area. Since 2012, the Council has awarded a total of $222,000 in scholarships.

In June, the Council and local community members gathered to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the inaugural class of scholarship recipients.  For the 2013-2014 school year, there are 13 scholarship recipients from Adams State University.
