Denver's Road Home Takes Top Honor at Awards for Excellence
Denver’s Road Home Named State’s Top Nonprofit by El Pomar Foundation’s Awards for Excellence
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – El Pomar Foundation’s Awards for Excellence honored and rewarded Colorado’s top nonprofit organizations this evening, handing out more than $400,000 in prizes. The Spencer and Julie Penrose Award for the year’s top nonprofit went to Denver’s Road Home, an innovative partnership between the City and County of Denver and the Mile High United way that is working to end homelessness in 10 years. The Penrose Award comes with a $50,000 prize.
Awards for Excellence, a program administered by Colorado Springs-based El Pomar Foundation, annually recognizes the state’s highest performing nonprofit organizations. Finalists and winners are selected by a statewide panel of community leaders. During the presentation ceremony, with approximately 1,000 on hand at the Broadmoor Hotel International Center, awards were handed out in 11 different categories, in addition to the naming of the Penrose winner. A total of 33 nonprofits were honored as finalists and winners. Finalists received $7,500. Winners received $15,000.
Four individuals and one business were also recognized for their contribution and commitment to the nonprofit sector, including:
Bob Holmes, Executive Director of Colorado Springs-based Homeward Pikes Peak (Shrine of the Sun Award, co-recipient)
Mary Gunn, Program Manager of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation/Pueblo office (Shrine of the Sun Award, co-recipient)
Larry Mizel, Chairman and CEO of Denver-based MDC Holdings and co-founder of the Mizel Museum (Ben S. Wendelken Special Trustees Award)
Richard Ballantine, Publisher of the Durango Herald (Russell Thayer Tutt Award)
US Bank of Colorado, sponsor of numerous community outreach programs (Governor John A. Love Award)
The Awards for Excellence program was established by El Pomar Foundation in 1989. Since that time, more than $5.2 million has been awarded to more than 400 different nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
The presentation ceremony is the culmination of a yearlong effort by the Awards for Excellence Selection Commission, which is comprised of community leaders from throughout the state of Colorado appointed by El Pomar trustees.
