El Pomar visitors harvest corn

Sue Price - Mail Staff Writer

El Pomar Foundation fellowship program participants got their hands dirty Wednesday learning about innerworkings of Colorado Farm to Table west of Salida.

"We've been in the fields all morning picking corn and getting it ready for shipment," Gary Butterworth, vice president of the El Pomar Foundation, said. Headquartered in Colorado Springs, Butterworth directs the post-graduate leadership and professional development program.

"This is a group of recent college grads who spend two years with the foundation learning about the nonprofit and philanthropic sector. Focus is on community development," he said.

Butterworth described the hands-on program as a "practical master's degree."

They harvested 19,760 ears of corn Wednesday.

The field day in Salida also included a tour of the greenhouse and other structures and meeting with regional council members.

Colorado Farm to Table is a nonprofit organization that donates all its produce to local and regional soup kitchens and food pantries.
